16 September 2011 (Phnom Penh) – The University of Cambodia (UC) and the Embassy of the Republic of Singapore in Phnom Penh are pleased to host the "Closed-Door Roundtable on ASEAN in 2012: Progress and Priorities." This event is scheduled to take place 5 October 2011, at Raffles Hotel Le Royal, from 12:00 to 2:30 PM.
The event is open only to invited guests.
The Guest of Honor for this event is H.E. Mr. K Shanmugam, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law, Republic of Singapore. H.E. Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, UC President and Personal Adviser to Samdech Techo Prime Minister Hun Sen, Secretary of State for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, will serve as Chair of this high-level discussion.
The objective of the event is to promote policy-related discussions and the exchange of views on the progress and priorities of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), particularly in preparation for Cambodia’s 2012 Chairmanship of ASEAN. The discussion focuses on ASEAN’s achievements and challenges up to 2012, in addition to different competing priorities, regional integration, community-building efforts, connectivity, and external relations.
The Roundtable is a Track 1.5 discussion, because it involves both government and non-government officials in academia and civil society.
Mr. K Shanmugam is Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law. He has also served as the Minister for Home Affairs. Since 1988, he has been a Member of Parliament (MP). Mr. Shanmugam went into private practice and became one of the Senior Partners and head of Litigation & Dispute Resolution at Allen & Gledhill LLP, which was the largest law firm in Singapore. In 1998, he was appointed a Senior Counsel of the Supreme Court of Singapore at the age of 38, one of the youngest lawyers to be so appointed. Mr. Shanmugam was educated at Raffles Institution from 1972 to 1977. He then read law at the National University of Singapore (NUS), where he graduated at the top of his class with First Class Honours, in 1984. He was admitted to the Singapore Bar as an Advocate & Solicitor in 1985.
